WHAT IS THIS FORM?
You are being invited to participate in a research study. The purpose of this consent form is to describe the research study to help you decide if you want to participate. It also tells you about why the study is being done, about the risks and benefits of the study, and about your rights as a research subject. You are being asked to participate because you are a recent graduate in the field of speech-language pathology. You are free to choose if you want to be in the research study. If you wish, you can talk it over with other people before deciding. You should not feel pressured to participate. If you decide to participate in this research study, you will be asked to click a button at the end of this form to indicate consent. You will be given a copy to keep.
WHY IS THIS STUDY BEING DONE?
The goal of this study is to gain a better understanding of the preparation offered in speech-language pathology graduate programs to develop cultural competence in their students and future clinicians.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY?
The purpose of this research is to gather the perceptions of recent graduates in the field of speech- language pathology concerning their preparedness to provide evaluation and intervention services to individuals with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL PARTICIPATE?
We anticipate that about 50 people will participate in this study.
HOW LONG WILL I BE IN THIS STUDY?
Participation would include taking one on-line survey that will require around 20-minutes of your time to complete.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN DURING THIS STUDY?
If you agree to participate in this study, you will be asked to do the following:
1. Open the survey in SurveyMonkey.
2. Read through and answer each question to the best of your ability.
3. Submit survey.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF THIS STUDY?
The risk is expected to be minimal in the study. Some questions may be uncomfortable to answer for the participant and so they may leave the item blank. Since there is no identifying information collected, there is no risk of professional or personal harm based on responses.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TAKING PART IN THIS STUDY?
This study will give you the opportunity to consider your educational and professional experiences in relation to diversity in the United States. It is anticipated that this survey will increase the awareness of any given participant to the importance of cultural competence as a speech-language pathologist.
This study will provide insight into the effectiveness of graduate programs to prepare speech-language pathologists for clinical assessment and intervention with culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
HOW WILL MY PERSONAL INFORMATION BE KEPT CONFIDENTIAL?
No information will be collected that could link your identity to your survey results. We will not ask your name or the name of your university. We will not collect data that links your survey to any personal data. We will not tell anyone you are in this study. All data will be stored on a computer that is protected with a password. Only Quinn Klobuchar and Rachael Suddarth will have access to the information contained in the electronic records. All information collected from you will be deleted or destroyed no later than May 12, 2019.
WHAT ARE THE COSTS OF BEING PART OF THIS STUDY?
There is no cost to you for being in this research study.
WILL I BE PAID FOR PARTICIPATING IN THIS STUDY?
You will not be paid for being in this research study.
WHAT IF I AM INJURED BECAUSE I TOOK PART IN THIS STUDY?
Although we believe that the risk of being injured during the course of this study is minimal, if you are injured, notify one of the investigator(s) immediately. Any medical care that you receive will be billed to you or to your insurance company in the same manner as your other medical needs are addressed. Neither the investigators nor St. Ambrose University can assume responsibility for any additional medical costs you may incur as a result of your participation in this research.
WHAT ARE MY RIGHTS IF I TAKE PART IN THIS STUDY?
Taking part in this research study is completely voluntary. You do not have to be in the study if you do not want to. If you decide to be in this study, but later change your mind, you may stop participating at any time. If you decide not to be in this study, or if you stop participating at any time, you will not be penalized or lose any benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.
